Great start to the year for Chong Wei
08 Jan 2012

Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei warmed up for next week’s Maybank Malaysia Open presented by Proton by bagging the Korea Open today.

The world No. 1 edged his great rival Lin Dan in three games, winning 12-21, 21-18, 21-14 in 50 minutes, to avenge his loss at the same stage at last year’s tournament.

It was the perfect result for Chong Wei, who goes in search for his record equalling eighth Malaysia Open title when the tournament begins at the Putra Stadium on Tuesday with the qualifying rounds.

Chong Wei, however, only starts his campaign to match Wong Peng Soon’s feat of winning eighth men’s singles title with a tie against a qualifier on Wednesday. If all goes according to plan, Chong Wei will likely meet Lin Dan in the final once again.

Chong Wei’s feat in winning the first Superseries tournament of the year, also received the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who congratulated him on his victory.

“Well done Datuk Lee Chong Wei!! Congratulations from me and my wife. We are in South Africa and just got the news,\" Najib said in his Twitter account.

Najib is in South Africa for a two-day working visit and to attend the 100th anniversary celebration of the state\'s ruling party, African National Congress (ANC).

This year’s Maybank Malaysia Open presented by Proton has attracted 298 shuttlers from 27 countries, with Malaysia having the biggest team with 54 players.
