THE building project for the National Badminton Academy in Bukit Kiara will start by June at the latest.
Sports Ministry assistant secretary for development Khairee Ekma Sulaiman said the RM 30 million project would comprise two phases.
Phase One would involve the construction of an 18-court hall and a hostel with a capacity of 200. “The budget has already been approved by the Government. The Public Works Department (JKR) will call for an open tender soon and we should confirm the successful company by the end of next month,” he said.
Phase Two, which will commence after the completion of Phase One, will involve the renovation of Stadium Juara and this will be done together with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). “We want one main point for the sport. The new hall will be used for training only, where else Stadium Juara will be for both training and competitions, and will also have a new gymnasium and office for BAM,” Khairee said.
Asked about the Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation which is occupying the place, Khairee said: “There has been a proposal to relocate them to either Putrajaya or Puchong, but we have not confirmed anything yet.”
Also present were staff of JKR to recce Stadium Juara to make sure everything was feasible with the approved budget.
