World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will seek a record nine Malaysia Open crown after winning the Maybank Malaysia Open presented by Proton on Sunday.

But, first, Chong Wei only has eyes on the Olympics and declared he will go all he can to bring back the country’s first gold medal.

Chong Wei was in dominant form against Kenichi Tago, crushing the Japanese shuttler 21-6, 21-13 at the Putra Stadium.

Tago, who was playing in his third Superseries final, was overwhelmed by the vocal support Chong Wei received from the near capacity crowd.

Chong Wei’s victory adds to those he won in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and last year and today’s win means he equalled Wong Peng Soon’s record of eight wins.

Peng Soon’s wins came in 1940, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953.

“I will now cut down my commitments and focus on the Olympics. For sure I will play in the Thomas Cup and the All England as they are the very important tournaments to me and the country,” said Chong Wei, who has now 41 international tournaments in his career, 22 of which are Superseries events.

“The win is a good Chinese New Year present for me and I will now enjoy a short break with my family before resuming training.

“It feels great to have equalled a legend’s record and now I have set my sights on winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal,” said Lee, who was runners-up at the last Olympics in Beijing four years ago.
